Chinese Brush Painting
Fridays for 8 weeks:
February 5, 12, 19, 26, March 5, 12, 19, 26
3:00–4:30 p.m.
Join master painter Jim Hardesty for this Museum favorite. All skill levels and ages are welcome.
FEES: $100 Museum Members/$120 nonmembers
MATERIALS: $50 new students/$10 returning students

Curator Ellen Avril will discuss the exhibition of Japanese ceramics.

AN EVENING AT THE FRENCH RENAISSANCE COURT
6:00–8:00 p.m.
Celebrate our exhibition of French Renaissance culture with an evening featuring David Yearsley on harpsichord, lute song by Mignarda, poetry readings, tours of the exhibition, and, of course, tastings of French wines and Renaissance delicacies. Come enjoy a vibrant collection of original songs and skits about animals, the environment, food, and books with Tom Knight Puppets. The performance begins at 10:00 a.m. with art-making to follow at 11:00 a.m. FEES: Free for Johnson Museum Members/$5 per family for nonmembers. Seating is limited and available on a first-come, first-served basis.

Come explore our collections with the Museum Club and discover some hidden masterpieces. Then get your hands dirty and make some art. No talent required!

Photographer France Scully Osterman will discuss her work, some of which is included in the exhibition The Image Wrought. This event is funded in part by a grant from the Cornell Council for the Arts and by generous gifts from Gale and Ira Drukier and Genevieve and Richard Tucker.

LECTURE
"The Japanese Tea Garden: Birth of an Icon"
5:15 p.m.
Japanese gardens are one of the icons of traditional Japanese culture. Many aspects of these gardens, such as natural stepping stones, carved stone lanterns, stone water basins, mossy ground, and naturalistic plantings, were first used by garden designers in the late sixteenth century as part of chanoyu, avant-garde art events that we now know as the tea ceremony. Marc Keane, visiting scholar in Cornell’s East Asia Program and author of the recently published book The Japanese Tea Garden, will discuss some of the most important elements of Japanese garden design and their roots in early tea gatherings.

Pretty Ugly: A night of blurred boundaries and exploration

8:00–10:00 p.m.
Question definitions, redefine boundaries, and blur lines in conjunction with the exhibition Bodies Unbound, with readings, performances, music, and art celebrating the conventional and unconventional and exploring meanings of ugliness and beauty. Hosted by the Museum Club and the History of Art Majors’ Society.
